Industry standards, shared benefits
There is no guaranteed recipe for success for a new technology or product. However, there are some key ingredients: safety, reliability, compatibility with existing technologies and interoperability between products.
Industry standards make sure new products have all these ingredients. By fostering consistency among products, they can also help make them easier for consumers to understand and use.
Standardization offers many other advantages to industry as a whole. For example:
● Improvements to performance, compatibility, reliability, safety and interoperability
● Economies of scale and lower costs – for example, by allowing manufacturers to address multiple regions with a single product or manufacturing line
● Cooperation between industry leaders, reducing the risk for ‘first-mover’ companies which pioneer new products or technologies.
In this way, industry standards can kick-start completely new markets – look at CD/DVD, GSM and Wi-Fi standards.
Philips’ role in standardization
Philips is actively involved in standardization activities and holds board positions with many standardization bodies and consortia. Through these activities, we help accelerate convergence on industry-wide technology solutions for new products.
In particular, Philips is active in system and technological standardization for:
Broadcast – Digital Audio/Video – Digital Rights Management (DRM) / Content Management – (Wireless) Connectivity – Lighting – Healthcare – Optical Storage – Mobile Communication
Investment in innovation
Standardization goes hand-in-hand with innovation. Standards make new technologies accessible to the widest possible audience, while technological developments drive the creation of new standards. Philips has a strong tradition of investing in innovation – both alone and with others. These investments have led to many breakthrough inventions for new global standards in areas such as:
● DVB / ATSC, DAB (digital TV and audio broadcasting)
● GSM, UMTS (mobile phones)
● ZigBee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, UWB, DLNA, UPnP (networking)
● Content Protection System VCPS Digital Rights Management, OMA, MARLIN
● MPEG, AVC, AAC+ (audio / video compression technologies)
● CD-Audio, CD-ROM, CDR/RW, SA-CD, DVD+R/+RW (optical media)
● Blu-ray Disc (optical media)
