IntroductionIEEE 1394, also known as FireWire or i.Link, defines a high-speed serial bus suitable as a peripheral bus or as a back-up to parallel backplane buses. The initial 1394-1995 standard specified speeds of 100, 200 and 400 Mbit/s for the bus.
Later versions of this standard – 1394a-2000 and 1394b-2002 – improve upon the original by providing better performance including higher bus speeds and bus media extensions.
The IEC 61883-1 standard builds on IEEE 1394, offering a general framework for a digital interface for consumer audio / video equipment.
