CD-RW Disc Patent License

We offer patent licenses to manufacturers of CD-RW discs. Our license provides CD-RW disc manufacturers with all the required Philips, Sony and Ricoh patents in a package. Please note that separate licenses are also offered by Sony and Ricoh. For information information on the conditions of these licenses please contact these other parties directly.

Detailed Description

The detailed terms and conditions of the licensing program are described in the patent license agreement that you can find in the patents/agreements section.

Some important information:
The joint CD-RW Disc Patent License Agreement comprises the essential patents of Philips, Sony, and Ricoh. A worldwide list of the essential patents, together with applicable expiry dates, is attached to the agreement. Under the terms of the standard license agreement we only require payment of royalties of patents where any one of these are actually used – in other words, either in the country of manufacture or in the country of sale.


CD-RW disc licensees have at all times the option to transfer to the latest version of the CD-RW Disc Patent License Agreement. In the event of such transfer, Philips shall not require payment of the entrance fee under the new license agreement.

Information:

Philips, as co-inventor of the CD system, publishes a number of CD standard specifications, which have been co-developed with the mentioned companies. Original CD standard specifications are available from Philips only

The CD-family started simple, with the CD Audio. Over time other formats followed. Below you find the different standards. To obtain a copy of a standard, please go to the “Ordering” section and see what conditions are applicable.

CD-R (PART II)
The Orange Book Part II or System Description CD Write Once (CD-WO) specifies the CD-WO disc format. The name CD-R (CD Recordable) is more commonly used than CD-WO. The CD Recordable (CD-R) system gives the opportunity to write once and read many times CD information. The recorded CD-R disc is “Red Book or Yellow Book compatible” so it can play back on conventional CD players. The CD-R format gives the possibility for both Audio (CD-DA) and Data (CD-ROM) recording.


Volume 1
This volume defines recording speed of 1x, 2x and 4 times nominal CD speed. (Latest version 3.1, Dec 1998.) Note: with the publication of Part II volume 2 this document has been renamed from "Orange Book Part II: CD-R, Version 3.1, into "Orange Book Part II: CD-R, Volume 1, Version 3.1.


Volume 2:Multi-Speed


CD-RW:(PART III)
The Orange Book Part III or System Description CD ReWriteable (CD-RW) specifies the CD-RW disc format. The CD-RW system gives the opportunity to write, erase, overwrite and read CD information. The CD-RW disc has a lower reflectivity than a Red Book or Yellow Book compatible disc, so it must be played back on CD-RW enabled (so called MultiRead) CD players. A CD-RW enabled CD player can read out CD-RW discs described in this document, as well as CD-R and conventional CD discs. The CD-RW format gives the possibility for both Audio (CD-DA) and Data (CD-ROM) recording.


Volume 1
This volume defines recording speed of 1x, 2x and 4 times nominal CD speed. (Latest version 2.0, Aug 1998) Note: with the publication of Part III volume 2 this document has been renamed from "Orange Book Part III: CD-RW, Version 2.0, into "Orange Book Part III: CD-RW, Volume 1, Version 2.0.


Volume 2: High Speed
This volume defines linear recording speeds between 4x and 10x nominal CD speed. (Latest version 1.1, June 2001)


Volume 3: Ultra Speed
This volume defines linear recording speeds between 8x and 24x nominal CD speed. (Latest version 1.0, Sept 2002)



Philips, as co-inventor of the CD system, publishes a number of CD standard specifications, which have been co-developed with the mentioned companies. Original CD standard specifications are available from Philips only.

 


This volume defines 6 disc types with linear recording speeds up to 16x, 20x, 24x, 32x, 40x and 48x nominal CD speed. (Latest version 1.2, April 2002)

Pricing Information

The royalty rate is determined by one key factor:

1) Status of the licensee
If the company fulfills certain conditions, such as complete, true and accurate reporting and timely payment, reward rates are available. Otherwise the standard rate applies.

Note of caution
Compliance reward royalty rates are only made available to licensees who are in FULL compliance with their obligations under the license agreement.

What is CDs21 Solutions?

CDs21 Solutions is a voluntary association to promote CDs (compact discs). It was created by a merger of the Multimedia CD Consortium (MMCD), so far promoting CD-i and Video CD, and the Orange Forum (OSJ) specifically focusing on CD-R/RW among these standards.

What is OSJ Disc Identification?

The OSJ a Disc Identification Method is provided by CDs21 Solutions’ Technical Working Group-1. Using this code appropriately, each drive can optimize the writing conditions for every disc. The result is better interchangeability between CD-R discs and CD-R drives.

The identification method has 3 parts:

Disc IDentification Code (DID code)

Manufacturer code (M code)

The M code indicates the manufacturer of a disc. By reading this code, CD-R writers can identify the (supposed) manufacturer of an inserted disc.

Type code (T code)

The T code indicates a recording characteristic of a disc. By reading this code, CD-R writers can identify the recording characteristics of an inserted disc: T1 code and T2 code.

Notes: A number of technology providers have allowed several manufacturers to use their DID. By doing so the technology providers have accepted responsibility for the recording characteristics of such discs.

To manufacture discs with a DID code, without permission of the holder of the DID code is misleading and may influence the reputation of the products of such companies.

What is a RID Code? What is a MID code?

As result of the discussions, between the consumer electronics manufacturers and the recording industry, measures are taken to respond to copyright and the piracy problems

The Recorder IDentification code (RID code) enables a trace for each disc back to the exact machine on which it was made using coded information in the recording itself. The use of the RID code is mandatory. Detailed information and the application form can be found in the following document
