Licensing Programs

Each year, Philips invests billions of Euros for research and development of new technologies and products. In the course of the research and development work  these technologies and products are also protected by patents. Philips has decided to make many of these Philips developed technologies available to those wishing to use them by granting licenses under its patents and sometimes also the related know-how. The conditions of licensing vary for the different technologies.

Below you can select a licensing program by first selecting a category. You can also view a complete list.

Philips owns a large number of patents in the field of Audio coding technologies and offers access to these patens via patent pool organizations (Via Licensing, Sisvel) or via bilateral agreements. Among the audio coding technologies licensed are MP3 and AAC.

Philips further owns a large number of patents in the field of Video coding technologies and offers access to these patens via patent pool organizations (MPEG LA) or via bilateral agreements. Among the video coding technologies licensed are AVC/H.264, MPEG-2 Video and VC1.

Brand licensing

A company’s success largely rests on its brand image. A successful, recognized brand instills brand loyalty from customers. Having a recognizable brand also increases the chance of successfully launching products into new markets to grow market share and revenue. But building a great brand takes time and investment and success is not guaranteed.

By offering you access to our vast collection of recognized brands for licensing, we help you create the best conditions for your company to be successful. Becoming a brand partner with us lets your company enjoy all the benefits of an established brand without having to build it from scratch. This translates into faster time-to-market for your products and a greater chance for regional and global brand success.

Our collection of brands for global brand licensing covers multiple product categories and is operated in conjunction with our business partners: Aristona, Schneider, Magnavox and Pye.  We want to maintain our high standards, so to become a brand partner you have to pledge your commitment to our brand promise. All partners should add value to the Philips brand with groundbreaking, impactful, innovative ideas and solutions. Cultivating a partnership with us will foster a long term business relationship which will ultimately lead to bringing the best innovations to market.

If becoming a brand license partner sounds appealing to you, please contact us. You will be joining a prestigious list of companies that have made the step already, and which continues to grow on a daily basis.

Source Identification Code (SID)

Although developed for use with CD discs, the SID code is currently also used for Super Audio CD, DVD Video/ROM and Blu-ray Disc.

The Source Identification Code (SID Code), also known as IFPI code, provides an optical disc production facility with the means to identify all discs mastered and/or replicated in its plant and the individual Laser Beam Recorder signal processor or mold that produced a stamper or disc.

Each production facility has its own unique code and this enables the music industry to trace the origin of optical discs.

The SID Code was jointly developed by rights owners and the optical disc industry. Since its introduction in 1994, the SID Code has proved to be of major benefit to optical disc producers. Its use as a quality control and marketing tool has caused the SID Code to become implemented in over 80% of the world's optical disc plants representing over 90% of the worldwide optical disc manufacturing capacity.

Although the SID Code implementation was initially on a purely voluntary basis, it is currently required by major content owners and/or, depending on the country, even included in legislation.

Even some companies in the recordable optical disc industry currently support the SID Code.

SID Codes can be ordered and implemented using the form and guide below.

Check your supplier

Does your company import/purchase CD-R/RW, DVD, BD, or other optical media products from a third-party manufacturer? If so, we strongly advise you to check if your supplier sells licensed products. In many countries,  you could be liable for patent infringement if you receive unlicensed products.

We provide two tools that allow you to check whether your supplier is licensed:

1. Licensee Database
2. Licensed Status Confirmation Document (LSCD)

To reduce to risk of liability for infringement that may result from importing, selling, and/or using unlicensed products, we strongly recommend you to follow the steps in the attached document and take all necessary precautions to ensure that your products are licensed.
