Philips is pleased with the outcome of the case as it recognizes that Norcent infringes our patents on DVD players. Philips invests huge amounts of money in research and development every year and we want other companies to respect our intellectual property. We tried to negotiate with Norcent for a long time and convince them to re-establish their license. But Norcent continued to import and sell unlicensed DVD players in the US. They did not show any respect for our intellectual property and in addition created unfair competition in the DVD player market. As an ultimate resort we had to sue them.
